++ Space is not a container. It is the system of relative distances and positions that first makes degrees of freedom possible — the deepest geometric root of the Particles layer. +
++ In the correspondence with Samuel Clarke (1715–1716) Leibniz defends a relational theory of space against Newton’s absolute space. Space is not an independent substance or container in which bodies are located. Space is an ideal system of relations — primarily relations of relative distance — that hold between coexisting bodies. +
++ Without bodies there is no real space; there is only the abstract possibility of placing things in relation to one another. Absolute position independent of all other bodies is, for Leibniz, a fiction. Two universes that differ only by a global shift of every body in the same absolute space are indistinguishable and therefore not two different states. +
++ Once space is understood as the order of possible relative positions, the first degrees of freedom become visible: the freedom of a body (or particle) with respect to its distance and orientation relative to others. Constraints and forces later reduce those freedoms and produce bound configurations. But the freedom itself is born with the relational structure of space. +
++ This is the conceptual root of what modern physics calls configuration space: the mathematical space whose points are possible arrangements of a system. Leibniz supplies the philosophical ground for treating relative distance as the primary positional degree of freedom. +
