Aster sounds super strange to me as German native speaker.

There's the flower which is written exactly like this as singular, but it's not that common knowledge. You would also normally call them "Astern" - so plural. "Aster" alone as verb sounds just weird.

The word may be a bad translation (or none at all from English to German: "A Star" and over generations just used as a general term for the flower and the word Aster was created).

I'm in favor of mox, that's much easier to explain to people, especially since it's a fraction in Cyberpunk 2077.

"kubo" is cube in Esperanto, and solves the SEO problem – not squatted, and short.

  • Describes the core property of IPFS--copies of data are referred to and shared not according to an external identity, but according to a property of the data itself (CID).

• While Trantor is the capital of the First Galactic Empire, Terminus is the hub of the Second Galactic Empire.
• The Foundation is the author of the Encyclopaedia Galactica. 'Nuff said.
• According to Merriam-Webster the word also means "either end of a transportation line or travel route". An IPFS node is the terminus via which a user interacts with the IPFS network.
• Same as with Trantor, it's the name of a planet, which gives us a large playing field for naming other implementations.

Reason it’s great:

If the idea is to encourage multiple implementations of IPFS protocol compatible nodes, maybe indicating which use-cases each build is optimized for in the name makes sense. I may be wrong about "workstation" -- I'm happy to edit this answer to whatever a preferred descriptor would be. For instance maybe ipfs-daemon or ipfs-server would make sense? I am thinking this way because the cloud implementation we are using at web3.storage (using serverless autoscale components when possible) we are calling Elastic IPFS. So maybe there is some sense in a name that denotes a use case.

This will be tough to do in practice: go-ipfs, being the first implementation, got adopted and is being used for multiple, often competing use cases: ipfs-desktop, brave, docker images, standalone server daemon, NAS devices, command line utility used in bash scripting.. etc.

I think we need to maintain status quo until a worthy, more specialized replacement implementations appear after the rename.

Reason it’s great:

It is a small, squared container where you can store things. They themselves are easy to store, organize and label. Shoeboxes look alike, but the content changes. Its shape makes it easy to ship and send.
If what you seek is an actual pair of shoes, any instance of your requested model will do, regardless of the vendor.

More importantly, IPFS is great for sneakernets, right? ;)

I like this name, butprobably better fit for other implementation than go-ipfs: just like you noted, it would be great for offline-first implementation of IPFS that is focusing on sneakernet, creating CARs and distributing content-addressed data by unconventional means.

Galactus

Reason it’s great:
According to Wikipedia, in comics universe, Formerly a mortal man, Galactus is a cosmic entity who consumes planets to sustain his life force, and serves a functional role in the upkeep of the primary Marvel continuity.
IPFS literally abbreviates InterPlanetary File System. Galactus was used to be surfing between galaxies in search of the life juice. He had invaded nearly all planets. He had god-like powers with which he was doing so.
Galactus can be said to be a InterPlanetary god (demi-god, to be precise). here, we can use the word galactus in literal sense.
