Now, the kernel is calling readline functions to store the readline history, and it also has the input_hist_raw storage of the actual history.

To get rid of the readline dependency, we need to move to a model where:

  • the kernel saves/restores the history to a separate file, as a pickle containing a list of strings (possibly multiline).

  • frontends can request this history from the kernel at any time.

  • terminal frontends are responsible for populating the readline history from this history list.
