ipython from git:

$ echo $VISUAL
$ echo $EDITOR
$ ./ipython.py console --pylab --profile=sympy
In [1]: %edit
IPython will make a temporary file named: /tmp/ipython_edit_DcyCQn.py
In [2]: %edit t.py
In [3]: ls t.py
ls: cannot access t.py: No such file or directory
In [4]: %edit /home/sk/a.py
In [5]: ls /home/sk/a.py
In [6]: type(S)
Out[6]: sympy.core.singleton.SingletonRegistry
In [7]: %edit S
In [8]: type(rsolve)
Out[8]: function
In [9]: %edit rsolve

i can confirm this issue, but unfortunately won't have the opportunity to look into it for some time.

%edit works totally differently for zmq-based two-process frontends. I believe that only the qtconsole has implemented the necessary functionality for %edit.

@minrk, it seems all works in 5.0.0. I believe, this could be closed.
