Original Launchpad bug 371041: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ipython/+bug/371041
Reported by: fdo.perez (Fernando Perez).

One unintended side effect of using a DVCS is that often, private commit messages aren't terribly informative (you're in a very fast-paced, experimental mode) and yet they show up in the final tree from which we later need to reconstruct good global changelogs for the release notes.

Here's an interesting discussion on the topic in the context of linux:

This is mostly a note to myself to spend some time writing a bit about this in the docs, anyone is welcome to contribute ideas.

This is related to our other issue about updating What's New (which is our changelog now). We just need to decide what to do about it.

It seems like we've picked up a reasonable workflow with details in the big merge commits and updating what's new, so I don't see much more need to leave this open forever. Closing now.
