Important

Note
The direct Gemini provider has been removed.
Google rejects requests from the hosted addon's server with a "not allowed region" error — ironically, the server is in Los Angeles — so the option only ever led to a dead end. Gemini models are still perfectly usable through an OpenAI-compatible gateway such as OpenRouter, which sidesteps the block entirely.
The addon uses an OpenAI-compatible provider — OpenRouter, OpenAI, Z.ai, or anything else speaking that API:
- Base URL examples:
https://openrouter.ai/api,https://api.openai.com - Model examples:
google/gemini-2.5-flash(OpenRouter-style),gpt-4o-mini - Optional extra headers (JSON):
{"HTTP-Referer":"https://example.com","X-Title":"Stremio AI Search"}
Advanced option:
- AI Temperature: controls randomness (lower is more deterministic; default
0.2)
Every model has a training cutoff, so recency-sensitive searches — "latest french movies", "new series this year", anything naming the current year — tend to come back with titles that are a year or two out of date.
OpenRouter can run a live web search and hand the results to the model before it answers. Enable it by appending :online to your model id:
google/gemini-2.5-flash:online
That is the entire change — no other setting to flip. In practice this makes a clear difference on "latest" and "new" style queries, which otherwise return stale recommendations.
A couple of things worth knowing:
- OpenRouter bills a small fee per web search on top of normal token cost. Check OpenRouter's web search pricing for current rates.
- It adds a second or two of latency per query, so it's a worthwhile trade when your searches lean toward new releases, and less so if you mostly search older or well-established titles.
One of the most powerful features of this addon is the ability to create your own recommendation rows directly on the Stremio homepage. In the "Custom Homepage Catalogs" field within the addon's advanced settings, you can define multiple, comma-separated catalogs.
Use a Title:Query format for each entry. This colon-separated, key-value pair approach provides a more structured and intuitive way to define your homepage. The Title serves as the distinct name for your catalog, while the Query is the natural language request for recommendations. This method prevents ambiguity and makes your configuration easier to read and manage.
- Use a Comma-Separated List: To create multiple catalogs in your homepage, separate each Title:Query pair with a comma.
- Example:
Mystery:recommend mystery thrillers,Sports:recommend sports movies
- Example:
- Find the Latest Content: Use keywords like new, latest, or recent to discover the most up-to-date movies and shows.
- Example:
New Series:new popular seriesorRecent Anime:latest anime movies
- Example:
- Be Specific: The addon is intelligent. If you specify "movies" in your query, it will only create a movie catalog. Similarly, asking for "series" will result in only a series catalog. For ambiguous queries, it will create catalogs for both movies and series.
- Example:
Pixar Films:Pixar movieswill create a single "Pixar Films - Movie" catalog.
- Example:
An example setting in the configuration page could be:
Thrillers:recommend mind-bending thrillers,Popular Series:new popular series,A24 Films:best of A24,Anime Classics:90s anime
This configuration would generate the following catalogs on your Stremio homepage:
- Thrillers - Movie
- Thrillers - Series
- Popular Series - Series
- A24 Films - Movie
- Anime Classics - Movie
- Anime Classics - Series
An example setting in the configuration page could be:
recommend mind-bending thrillers, new popular series, best of A24, 90s anime
This would generate the following catalogs on your Stremio homepage:
Recommend mind-bending thrillers - MovieRecommend mind-bending thrillers - SeriesNew popular series - SeriesBest of A24 - Movie90s anime - Movie90s anime - Series

When self-hosting the addon, you can configure the following environment variables in a .env file:
HOST— your hostname without a scheme (e.g.example.comorlocalhost:7000). The app prependshttps://itself; including it produceshttps://https://…URLs in the manifest.ENCRYPTION_KEY— encrypts each user's configuration inside their install URL. Required, at least 32 characters. Treat it as permanent: changing it invalidates every existing install, because nobody's URL can be decrypted any more. Back it up.ADMIN_TOKEN— required by the cache-management endpoints below. If unset, those endpoints refuse every request.RPDB_API_KEY/RPDB_FREE_T0_API_KEY— RPDB posters (optional)FANART_API_KEY— landscape artwork for "Similar" recommendations (optional)GITHUB_TOKEN— lets in-app feedback open issues. A fine-grained token needs only Issues: Read and write on this repo; never grantrepo(optional)RECAPTCHA_SECRET_KEY— reCAPTCHA on the feedback form (optional)ENABLE_LOGGING—trueto enable file logging (optional)
Trakt integration is retired, so TRAKT_CLIENT_ID / TRAKT_CLIENT_SECRET are
no longer used.
The addon exposes administrative endpoints for cache management. They are
protected by an admin token set as ADMIN_TOKEN in .env. If ADMIN_TOKEN
is unset the endpoints refuse every request.
The token is sent in the X-Admin-Token request header — never in the
URL, where it would be written to access logs and proxy logs. Because a
browser address bar cannot set a header, use curl (or any HTTP client):
# Put the token in a variable once; it never appears in the URL.
