📢 Debookee – End of Active Development & License Sales #17

Description

@debookee

Dear users,

After years of development, it's time to announce that Debookee is no longer under active development, and we have also stopped selling new licenses.
Debookee was built as a powerful, all-in-one network traffic analyzer, relying on several complex low-level components. Over time, Apple’s macOS ecosystem has become increasingly restrictive, particularly in areas such as:

  • Access to low-level network APIs
  • System-level privileges and root permissions
  • Packet capture and traffic redirection
  • Interception and TLS decryption

Debookee integrates multiple external frameworks and tools like Wireshark, mitmproxy, and sslsplit to provide deep traffic analysis capabilities. Unfortunately, these tools rely heavily on low-level access that Apple has progressively limited through stricter security policies, kernel restrictions, and undocumented API behavior.

Changes in macOS security architecture and the evolution of Apple hardware (Intel → ARM, M-series processors) have introduced critical compatibility challenges.
In addition, the complete lack of response to the bug report we filed about the pf firewall in 2022 has widened the gap between us and Apple support, making it increasingly difficult to maintain a stable, working version of Debookee across macOS releases.

Please note that this announcement applies only to Debookee.
Our other application, LanScan, is not affected and continues to be actively maintained and supported.

Given this technical landscape, and in order to avoid any confusion for new users, we’ve decided to stop license sales entirely. Existing users may continue to use the current version, but please note that:
- No further updates are planned
- No official support is provided
- Compatibility with future macOS versions is not guaranteed

Thank you to everyone who supported Debookee over the years — whether you bought a license, sent feedback, reported bugs, or just reached out with kind words.

This project has been an incredible journey — full of technical challenges, late-night debugging sessions, and those rewarding moments when everything finally worked.

I'm grateful for the community that formed around it, and for everyone who believed in a small independent tool trying to do something ambitious on macOS.

With ❤️,
Thomas
