Section 1. Intro ===================================================================== This is an attempt to publicly and non-offically update the core OS (linux) for the Syanspe Wireless E10. Synapse Wireless's E10 page: http://www.synapse-wireless.com/index.php?mainID=3&subID=3&type=product&prodID=10 Synapse Wireless's E10 product brief: http://www.synapse-wireless.com/documents/products/SYNAPSE_SNAP_Connect_E10.pdf The E10 comes in a few varieties, but they all essentially have the same basic hardware. An Atmel AT91SAM9G20 processor, 64 MB Ram, 256 MB Nand Flash, and a RF Engine of some kind. (RF100/RF200/RF300) Synapse Wireless's RF Engine overview: http://www.synapse-wireless.com/index.php?mainID=3&subID=3&type=product&prodID=3 The main purpose of the E10 is to run software called Snap Connect. Snap Connect is python code to interface between the RF Engine and some other system. The "some other system" is your system of choice. Some people have the E10 collect data from the RF Engines, then upload the data with HTTP calls. There are other ways, but this is about upgrading the core OS of the E10. Section 1.A Why upgrade the E10 OS? ===================================================================== The stock E10 OS/applications run fine. (Linux 2.6.33, python 2.6.6, buildroot 2010.02, busybox 1.13.x) Do you need more USB Wifi (802.11 b/g/n) cards supported? Do you need more USB Cellular Data Modems supported? Those were my primary reasons for updating. I hear python 2.7 adds some nice features and libraries. Since Snap Connect is python based, and your main application on the E10 is in python, this will help with some issues. This build is based on Linux 3.0.4, buildroot 2011.11-git, python 2.7.2, busybox 1.19.2. The updated linux kernel add support for many newer USB Cell/Wifi devices. The updated buildroot updates many packages, including python, busybox, (adds udev), the gcc compiler, and many other packages used. Section 2. How to upgrade the E10? ===================================================================== I have spent a considerable ammount of time to ease the upgrade process. The output of this set of directories and scripts is a zip file. *BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES!* *BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES!* *BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES!* *BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES!* - backup important files on the E10! Login to your freshly instaled E10 linux. Things to do: - Install snap connect - set root password (type passwd) - setup networking: Defaults to DHCP on eth0 (wired ethernet) Edit /etc/network/interfaces if you want static ip Edit /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf for your wireless AP/Key - As part of the upgrade, your /root directory was backed up to /var/log/rootbkup.tar
