There are three ways to propose a session:
<ol>
 <li><strong><em>A proposal for a talk/panel</em></strong> during the conference part : there are 45 minutes slots that will have all people's full attention as everybody will be in that one room.</li>
 <li><strong><em>An Ignite talk</em></strong> that will be presented during the<a href="/pages/ignite-talks-format"> Ignite sessions</a>: these are 5 minutes slots with slides changing every 15 seconds (20 slides total) also presented to all attendees in one room</li>

 <li>Business impact of Devops</li>

 <li>Examples of failed Devops efforts (lessons learned)</li>
 <li>Why Devops will never work (brave contrarians with solid arguments/data are welcome!)</li>
 <li>And any other topic in the the realm of Devops</li>
</ul>
<strong>How to make a proposal:</strong> Send an email to [<a href="mailto:proposals-bangalore-2011@devopsdays.org">proposals-bangalore-2011@devopsdays.org</a>] with the following information
<ol>
 <li>Proposal working title (can be changed later)</li>

 <li>Description or abstract</li>

<strong>Rules:</strong>
<ul>
 <li>Be specific... we aren't mind readers</li>
 <li>Detail is good... but not as important as explaining why your proposal would be interesting</li>
 <li>Nominations welcome... if you know someone who has content/experience relevant to the DevOps conversation, please point us in their direction!</li>
 <li>Multiple proposals welcome... just follow the other rules</li>

### <strong> The call for proposals is open until 15 of September 2011 </strong>

### Please consider [commenting on proposals submitted by others](overview/)

There are three ways to propose a session:
<ol>
 <li><strong><em>A proposal for a talk/panel</em></strong> during the conference part : these are 45 minutes slots that will have all people's full attention as everybody will be in that one room.</li>
 <li><strong><em>Openspace session</em></strong> : even without a prepared presentation we welcome the discussion and interaction by having people propose a session on the fly during the openspace opening. Check the <a href="/pages/open-space-format">openspace format</a> for more information
</ol>

### The theme this year is all about '<b>inclusive</b>':

- In the last two years we have had an emphasis on infrastructure as code, configuration management, continuous delivery monitoring, agile processes.
- While these are certainly still valid subjects, we greatly value new content, new speakers
- Especially content that explores the boundaries of devops. After all, we don't want to stay in our own little echo-chamber.
- Bonus value is given to real-life experiences especially if they contain the good, the bad and the ugly.

<strong>Some suggestions to get you thinking:</strong>
<ul>
 <li>What is the role of QA/Tester in devops, how do we integrate QA in the continuous delivery process</li>
 <li>The impact devops has on traditional security/auditing/change control</li>
 <li>How does devops co-exist with ITIL, Cobit</li>
 <li>What about configuration management and delivery in Mixed Unix AND Windows environments</li>
 <li>Using Monitoring, Metrics, Logs , Dashboard to radiate knowledge and use it as feedback in an organization</li>
 <li>The impact of devops on HR policies, and the hiring process</li>
 <li>Help prove that devops can scale beyond the 5-8 person web startups, we love traditional IT enterprise cases</li>
 <li>With all the automation, data is still a hard thing to handle, how does it affect, DBA's, backup strategies, ...</li>
 <li>How to involve the business in devops</li>
 <li>How to get YOUR boss involved, how do you make the business case</li>
 <li>And of course any other topic in the realm of Devops</li>
 <li>Beyond Configuration Management, about challenges like orchestration, or doing things at large scale</li>
</ul>

<strong>How to make a proposal:</strong> Send an email to [<a href="mailto:proposals-goteborg-2011@devopsdays.org">proposals-goteborg-2011@devopsdays.org</a>] with the following information
<ol>
 <li>Proposal working title (can be changed later)</li>
 <li>Type (presentation, panel discussion, moderated general discussion, debate, etc.,ignite)</li>
 <li>Description or abstract</li>
</ol>
<strong>Rules:</strong>
<ul>
 <li>Be specific... we aren't mind readers (a description of about 20 lines is about right)</li>
 <li>Detail is good... but not as important as explaining why your proposal would be interesting</li>
 <li>Nominations welcome... if you know someone who has content/experience relevant to the DevOps conversation, please point us in their direction!</li>
 <li>Multiple proposals welcome... just follow the other rules</li>
</ul>

title: Know your cirrus from your cumulus - how clouds differ beyond cost and speed and how that affects you
---
**Abstract:** "
As adoption of cloud platforms grows, both in dedicated and "mixed-use" configurations, the original Cloud 1.0 vision of "run anything, anywhere" has been extended and refined to cover a number of considerations that are turning out to be essential across various cloud usage models. If you're already working with cloud applications, or are considering to do so, and have open questions regarding SLAs, performance, legal aspects and more, you're in good company.

During 2011, jclouds held a dozen discussions with cutting-edge cloud users, platform developers and infrastructure providers, identifying and structuring
metamodels beyond pure hardware that applications care about.

These covered, amongst others, service levels, auditability, geography, jurisdiction, and stewardship. In this talk, we'll be giving an overview of this research and introduce and explain the models that make commodity hardware or network decisions more than meets the eye.

You'll understand how relationships between factors such as geography, residency, and stewardship can impact your ability to successfully utilize cloud computing offerings, and will walk away with an idea of important questions to ask yourself before entering a cloud computing environment, as well as a sense of where and how to find some answers.
"

**Target Audience**:

- Anyone interested in developing on clouds and/or planning applications to be developed against, hosted on or migrated to the cloud

**Level:**

- Technical knowledge: beginner
- Awareness of cloud concepts: intermediate

**Prerequisites**

- some awareness of general cloud concepts (IaaS, PaaS etc.) and providers will help users understand the motivations and background

**Proposer:** Andrew Philips - Jclouds

An early believer in the ability of Java to deliver "enterprise-grade" software, Andrew quickly focused on the development of high-throughput, resilient and scalable Java EE applications. Specializing in concurrency and high performance development, Andrew gained substantial experience of the intricacies, complexity and challenges of enterprise application environments while working for a succession of multinationals.

Continuously focused on effectively integrating promising new developments in the JVM space into corporate software development, Andrew joined XebiaLabs in March 2009, where he is responsible for product management of their deployment automation product Deployit.

Amongst others, he worked on Multiverse, the open-source Java STM implementation behind Akka, and contributes to jclouds, the leading Java cloud library. He's also enjoying the wide variety of JVM offerings, especially Clojure and Scala.

Devopsdays Goteborg October 14-15, 2011

Devopsdays are non-commercial community- driven events for people interested in helping develop and spread the ideas from the devops movement.

## The format
This year the Mountain View conference will be a two day event like its East Coast, European and Australian cousins.
Friday 17th
On the first day, we will have as last year's edition a mix between presentation, panel discussions and ignite talks sessions (program is currently being determined).
The public will be encouraged to interact with the speakers either by using microphones in the room or by using a “hot seat” format such as a “fishbowl”.
After the last session, participants willing to attend the second day will do a first round of proposals for the next day open-space.
Then we will call it a day and invite the participants for a social drink event to encourage further discussions and networking.
Saturday 18th
On Saturday we will mainly have an open-space (you can learn more about open- space here: http://devopsdays.org/pages/open-space-format/ ).
We will also have several “ignite demo” slots during the day allowing 10 minute long demos (time will be strictly enforced).

## Conference follow-ups
The event will be recorded, and we encourage participants to open-space to share and publish the result of their work.
Videos and ignite slides will be published online as soon as possible, and all materials, including blog articles and reference to the event will be linked from the devopsdays.org website for all to consult.

## Participants
Friday we have room for around 250+ people. Saturday we limit to 150 people.
If you are interested in knowing more about the profile of the typical crowd attending this sort of events, you can have a look at last year's attendee list: http://devopsdays-us-2010.eventbrite.com/

## Location and venue
The event will be held in LinkedIn office in Mountain View, California.
Organization

## Process
Devopsdays being community events, we believe in keeping it free from commercial/vendor pitches and in keeping the proposal process as open as possible.
The criteria when selecting the proposals are to:

- keep a good mixture between business, process, tools and integration oriented subjects
- prefer actual war stories over conceptual only talks
- promote ‘new’ content over recycled content
- promote ‘new’ topics over traditional topics
- ban commercial talks/vendor pitches (except during “ignite demos”)

## Sponsoring
This year again our main sponsor for Devopsdays Mountain View will be LinkedIn: they will be providing the facilities, event staffing (security, help with check-in, direct people to parking, etc.), video production, and lunch.
Still, we are looking for supporting sponsors to help us make this event even better by allowing us to:

- keep the event free (or at the very least as cheap as possible for the attendees)
- create awesome unique tshirts to give our attendees to wear proudly pay for breakfast for both days, Friday night drinks and appetizers cover miscellaneous costs including organizers travel costs
Sponsor package
We have a unique package for sponsors, with a cost of 1000 USD. As a sponsor you will be entitled to the following advantages: ● logo on the website ● logo on the published videos
● mention during all official communication ● shout outs during the day ● tables to collect business cards and distribute flyers/goodies/marketing material
From the feedback gleaned from sponsors at previous conferences, we strongly advise our sponsors looking to hire to send technical staff and encourage this person to join the discussion.
Please note that we don’t give away participants emails/personal details.
If you have a product, you can present it during one of the 10 minute “ignite demo” on Saturday.
Contact details
You want to be a sponsor? Great!
All you have to do is send us a mail at organizers-mountainview- 2011@devopsdays.org with the following information and a vector image of your company logo (or a least a high quality bitmap logo):
your company name your company address your company website your contact name your job title
your email your phone/fax
For the payment please use the paypal link from the page http://devopsdays.org/events/2011-mountainview/sponsor/
Your logo will be associated with the event on our website as soon as your payment is processed!
