In addition to simple whitelist, it would be pretty cool to authenticate based on a github user's involvement with a specific project (or several related projects). We could check if the user is a watcher, forker, committer, how much they contribute, whether any of it was accepted, etc.

Kind of like enlightened self-interest. Without going to extremes, it seems fair at least to expect watching the project for granting login to its website. It's good for the project -- that's good to watch / use & contribute to...
