As an alternative to sorting by slug, allow the user to enter a date: field in the yaml header, like so:

title: Generic Post Title
date: 2009-06-21 18:07:09 -08:00

layout: post

Then, after the yaml is loaded, if this field exists, use it instead of the date pulled from the file name.

I've already implemented this on my fork, in a very rudimentary way (doesn't check date validity or anything). The commit URL is:

This is not totally fixed. The to_liquid generation sees the date as a string and not a date. This is an issue if you want to do an xml feed with to_xmlschema.

I have a fix for this on my fork: git://github.com/ascarter/jekyll.git
