The feed is useful for watching atomic changes in the branch without being registered on Github. I know, we have a news feed on the official site already. The commit feed is an addition for commit lovers.

The second reason is educational. Many projects don’t publish release notes. If they learn from Jekyll and just add a master branch feed to their site, this can improve their community relation.
