Subtitles rendered above bottom black bar on movies with Aspect Ratio 2.35:1

Describe the bug

1. Playback a movie with external (.srt for instance) subtitle and 1.85:1 (16:9) aspect ratio
2. Confirm that subtitle is displayed correctly
3. Playback a movie with external (.srt for instance) subtitle and 2.35:1 aspect ratio (with black bars on top and bottom)
4. Confirm that subtitles aren't displayed correctly. Specifically, the size seems smaller and their position is above the correct one, which seems to indicate they are being drawn with the position having to be inside the video and not overlapping the black bars (which is how it used to be and how it is universally prefered)

Also, if this issue is not easily solved, could we have a switch in the config to replace the subtitle renderer to be the old one?

Just noticed this on my android tv today, on version v0.18.2.

Emby does the same thing.
It is THE ONE reason I switched to jellyfin. Is this going to be permanent, or just temporary?
Even though I liked the new features, kudos to the developers, I switched back to v0.17.9.

The lack of "subtitle offset from bottom" menu option, displaying the subtitles "the old way" is a dealbreaker to me.

Same here. I thought this is something with my settings and have done default resets, reinstall and still the same. Version 0.18.2 on Firestick 4k Max 2nd gen.

I'm really not sure what the issue here is. Subtitles are shown on top of the video, if the video aspect ratio is different from the device aspect ratio it will move the subtitles accordingly.

Please share some screenshots (preferably in both 0.17.z and 0.18.z to see the difference) so I can better understand what is the problem.

Hi, below are examples showing the issue. Subs above the black bar are exactly as in ver 0.18.2.

Got these from the internet as away from home but these represent the issue perfectly.

First of all thanks for your work. I truly enjoy it almost EVERYDAY.
I'd like to point out that if you don't feel this is unexpected behavior, it would be great to have that switch to previous renderer. It's not the first time time I've seen this kind of thing (subtitle position despite black bars) being customizable as well, I believe it was on Kplayer or Potplayer...
I understand it may be a non issue for many other ppl but for me, at least, it is super annoying. I'm ready for some begging if needed 😅

Thanks for elaborating. The subtitles no longer show in the "black bars" as some subtitle formats (like PGS) will be made to be shown on top of the video area. If we allowed all subtitles to use the device-height instead of the video-height some details of the subs will end up in wrong places.

This isn't an issue with simple text subtitles like SRT but there is no "special case" for those implemented, all subtitle formats are currently restricted to the video area.

If there is a lot of demand I may look into it, I'll mark this issue as a feature request for that.

Understood. Maybe this is best for most users.

I have an enhancement request on Emby for around 2 years now for the exact same issue, so I'm not keeping my hopes up.
Then again, the devs here are awesome so I might be proven wrong.

This to me means that the latest client version I can use is v0.17.9.
According to the development roadmap, do you plan on keeping compatibility on the server side for the v0.17.9 client version, or should I also plan on stopping server updates/upgrades ?
