[Issue]: Nvidia GPU support randomly breaks in Jellyfin in Docker

Sometimes I encounter a problem where Nvidia GPU isn't being detected by Jellyfin. The only solution I found is to docker rm the container and run a new one.

The GPU detection sometimes breaks when I execute: docker exec -it jellyfin bash and exit the shell, but it seems it isn't the only cause and it happens seemingly randomly. When that breaks and Jellyfin isn't using Direct Play, I get this error in the browser: "Playback Error This client isn't compatible with the media and the server isn't sending a compatible media format.".

EDIT: it crashed again, when I'm executing nvidia-smi in docker, I get the following output:

Failed to initialize NVML: Unknown Error

while nvidia-smi works normally in the host system. After reseting the container with docker restart jellyfin, everything works properly again.

I start the Docker container like this: docker run -d --name jellyfin -e NVIDIA_DRIVER_CAPABILITIES=compute,video,utility -e NVIDIA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=all --gpus all -p 8096:8096 -p 8920:8920 -v /jellyfin/config:/config -v /srv/mergerfs/pool1/jellyfin-media:/media -v /jellyfin/cache:/cache --restart unless-stopped --memory 2g jellyfin/jellyfin

Are there any more things I could do to help diagnose the problem?

Can you add more hardware information? I use a Tesla M40 card in a Dell R720xd and it stays stable for months before I update jellyfin.

With a GeForce card I think of some possibilities:

• Is the system ever suspended or hibernated? (Could invalidate the docker-nvidia GPU bind)
• Does the card go into a sleep or idle power mode? (Hybrid graphics, displays going to sleep, etc?)
• Have you checked the syslog to see if the PCIe link changed? (Once upon a time I had a card that "fell off the bus" sometimes and had to reset the card or system.)

The server's CPU is Ryzen 7 2700X and the GPU is ASUS GeForce GTX 1050 2GB. No display is attached to the server and it never suspends or hibernates. I'm not sure if the GPU goes into a sleep mode, is there any way to check that?

I could only see these kinds of messages in syslog/dmesg, they were visible after executing nvidia-smi or while playing a movie in Jellyfin:

but it's probably not related to the issue. I could also find some messages about the container going out of memory (I have limited it to 2 GB, but maybe I'll increase it to see if it fixes anything), but they didn't always appear concurrently with the GPU crash.

I also have noticed that GPU often crashes in Jellyfin after working with some other Docker containers on the system. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence, but I often find Jellyfin in that state after going back from work, where I use other Docker containers on the server.

I went back over my metrics for my own Jellyfin instance and found the maximum memory usage of the jellyfin docker container to be just under 16GB. (Currently sitting at 8GB for the past few days) This is with NVENV and NVDEC with x264 and x265 content, where on average each transcode process takes ~half a GB of VRAM on my Tesla P100.

If you container ran out of memory then I'd definitely suspect that as the first problem.

After writing my last reply, I both installed nvidia-persistenced and increased max RAM allowed for Docker, and so far it seems the GPU is working fine in the container. I'll close the issue for now since it seems to have been fixed by either of these things.

I was unable to find a permanent fix for my setup using any of the steps in the referenced issues from Nvidia. I created a bash script to add to a cronjob which:

• Checks the container for GPU access,
• Restarts the container if access is lost,
• Logs its actions to a local file,
• Reports to an NTFY server when the container is restarted, or if the restart fails.

Sharing here in case it helps others.
