This ensures that gem versions of executables will be run instead of
those in the core Ruby library (ie. rake).

You might want to check out the bundler plugin - https://github.com/carsomyr/rbenv-bundler

It looks like it accomplishes what you're looking for here.

What if I gem install rake in my gemset to get a newer version of rake than is built into my Ruby version? Bundler won't help unless it's in Gemfile. Ruby's binaries should not override a gem's binary.
