smart quotes fail with leading dot #494

This input

'.foo'

'foo'

gets converted to this HTML code:

<p>’.foo’</p>
<p>‘foo’</p>

Note the difference in the leading opening quote character. Other output devices are affected similarly, so this is a problem in the parser. I can get the correct result by saying '\.foo', however, I think it shouldn't be necessary since a leading dot is nothing special AFAIK.

Forgot to mention: This is with pandoc 1.9.1.2.

You don't find a period at the beginning of a word in regular text -- generally only in code. And code should be in backticks: try

'`.foo`'
