Thank you for everything, Jim -- including so much more than I could possibly mention in a comment. I always wanted to speak to you, and will never get the chance... which has inspired me to come out of my shell some and get involved so much more than I ever have before. That's the greatest gift you could have given me -- and it's devastating that I won't have the chance to let you know that.

Rest in peace. You're still teaching us how to be better people.

I started as a hacker. With .NET, I was a coder. With PHP, I was a programmer. With JavaScript I was a developer. Then I came to Ruby and experienced great tools like Rake and Gem, and became a Software Engineer. Thank you Jim Weirich, you have helped me immeasurably in my career. Ruby, nor me, would be where they are today without you. You have set a very high standard to be strived for in the next generation of software engineering teachers and collaborators. Rest in peace.

Sharing power and knowledge at conferences was always a pleasure, @jimweirich. I don't think a community could have asked for a better leader and cultivator of knowledge and love. You always had time to listen to the ideas of an expert, but made sure to give the same respect to the noob. Thank you for showing us that everyone is important. You will be missed.

R.I.P. Jim Weirich.

As a younger teen programmer, I got started using Ruby, Rake, Rails and such tools. Ruby was a simple language, and I was able to pick it up quickly. Thanks to all these tools, and your open source activity, I've been a programmer for a couple years. I've gone on to write my own Rake-like build system heavily inspired by your work.

You will be missed in the Ruby community for your love of learning/teaching, along with your Barely Noticeable programming expertise.

RIP Jim. You persuaded me that there's nothing that can't be done with Ruby and showed me how to be enthusiastic about code. What I learned from you up in Edinburgh has formed the foundation of everything I do today.

The length and contents of this thread speaks volumes of the impact Jim had on so many others.
I was fortunate to see Jim talk once at Miami RubyConf 2013 but only that one time.
I'm relatively new to the Ruby so I didn't know how deep Jim's roots go until I read this glorious thread.
RIP JIM and thanks for all the love/code you shared; obviously, you'll be missed.

Since I'm not involved in the (wonderful) ruby community, I've never heard of Jim until about 53 minutes ago. Youtube recommended his "Y Not" video, after that I immediately had to find more talks or content by him. Searching for more brought me here.

I've never been so saddened by the death of a man I never knew, and barely knew of. However, after reading some of the comments here I can see he had this effect on, quite likely, everyone. You are one hell of a speaker, teacher, and developer, and while this may be your final commit, your talks will forever continue to educate, inspire and amaze.

I will remember you whenever I have the impulse to use way more anonymous functions than I had previously thought possible.

So saddened and so sorry that I've just learned of Jim's passing. I'm not part of the Ruby community, as I knew Jim before he became so well known for his contributions there. I studied and worked in the Cincinnati area during the 90's, so I got to know Jim as a leader when the Cincinnati Linux User's Group first started and than also as a teacher during the infancy of my software development career. He was such a great lecturer and a genuinely nice guy. I most remember him sharing a story from an earlier time in his career when he was doing development supporting the rocket launch complexes at NASA Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (forget which). That story only added to my already burgeoning desire to work in space flight, which I had to honor of doing in support of NASA Johnson Space Center here in Houston for over a decade. But having moved away from Cincinnati, I had fallen out of touch with Jim and didn't realize his passing until today when something led me to look him up and see what he was doing.

Rest in peace, Jim. You had such an impact on so many, and I'll certainly always remember the impact you had on my education an on my career.

I saw different youtube videos with Jim talking about Ruby. I'm currently starting to get into the Ruby community thanks to Jim's speeches. I really enjoy the language and it is really really sad to know that he died. I think the World needs more people like him.

It was two years ago today that Jim went to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Yes, I know many people think Christians have two brains (one is lost, and the other is out looking for it), but Jim was not a naive fool. He loved the Lord, the Lord loves him, and because of that Jim loved others. Genuinely.

Thanks, Jim.

I watched Bob Martin's "Architecture: The Lost Years" at the end of last year and have been searching for patterns to decouple my business logic from my framework. Thank you, Jim, for showing me how, two years after your passing. If that isn't a testament to the work you did while you were still with us, I don't know what is.

Commited on his final day. Still an inspiration to this :neckbeard:-aspiring Midwestern boy. I'm working up a tribute cover of his ukulele song "Has anybody seen my code?". ❤️

I did not have the pleasure of meeting Jim, but it amazes me to see how many lives he touched with his code and his attitude.

This month, his legacy touched my life in a very special way.

Rest in peace. 🌹

It was a delight to share a little about your legacy with a reporter from WIRED earlier this month.

Your joyful presence is still dearly missed at every Ruby event I attend. ❤️
