That's interesting that it's not there by default. The .local prefix isn't something I made up - it's part of the XDG Base Directory standard (http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/basedir-spec-latest.html).

I'm assuming here that if you send along PREFIX=$HOME/.local to make install, then it's on your path. If you've done what all the trendy mac people are doing and chowning or chmoding /usr/local, then you can go right ahead and install with PREFIX=/usr/local.

That being said, I think your patch would be fine with a little bit more explanation - just to make it clear that $HOME/.local isn't a special property of ry.
