The Joomla extensions directory teams needs help with a new Newsletter template. Tasks involve creating some nice header image templates that they can change as per intent of the newsletter. And the HTML layout for the same. You can look at the older version of the designs here

Can I have a bit more details about this task?

  1. Do I need to also write the HTML?
  2. Some sample text I can work with?
  3. Some sample of subjects they might use? ( creating some nice header image templates that they can change as per intent of the newsletter. - what could be the intent?)

Hi Shirat,

  1. Yes, please, Html. We send newsletters with Acy. If you could implement a mailing framework like Foundation for Emails 2, then it will be awesome.

  2. We plan to send around 3 articles to JED users and developers. The content will be the same that it is shared in Joomla channels by the marketing team. The newsletter will be sent with a monthly frequency.

I can send you the past editions of the newsletter, but they are really old, with a look that not aged well. So, if we create a new newsletter from scratch, I'm sure that it will be amazing.

  1. These are the subjects of previous editions:
  • SURVEY: JED New Design 2017
  • JED: Joomla! Update System requirement
  • Newsletter: Joomla! 3.6.4 - Important Security Announcement
  • Google Summer of Code 2016
  • Backwards Compatibility in Joomla 3.4.7
  • JED Newsletter - Dec 2015
  • JED Newsletter - Oct 2015 - Joomla! 3.4.5 Released
  • Joomla World Conference

  1. HTML - Yes
  2. You can check the link in the main issue description above for the last newsletter that was sent . Generally newsletters will have content focussed on 2 type of audiences
    a. Extension Developers
    b. Extension Users
  3. Intent - A lot of times is generic from what i have seen in the past newsletters - like updates from the Joomla extension directory. OR in the earlier case it was about a Survey.. So i would do a general design graphic which can serve as a template to change some text and main image. I have already sent the issue on to Anibal & Jazz who might have more comments. Have asked them to give the same by eod today.

OOps like my bad internet connection on the bus caused me to send some duplicate content as Anibal has already posted !

A curve ball: we'd like to have the option to include these ads in the newsletter:

  • Banner - 468 x 60
  • Button - 160 x 160
  • Leaderboard - 728x90
  • Skyscraper - 150x800

We are open to any suggestion to implement them in a responsive format (if it's not possible to implement all of them, then we need at least one of them).

Adding based on separate discussion with Anibal - it would be nice to have some Ad positions in the newsletter. One thing to consider here is that the newsletter needs to be responsive.

Foundation is a good idea.. this can also be good inspiration

What about getting inspiration from the design of the Certification and the JUG newsletters in order to keep some consistency in our communication?

Hi

The JUG one is pretty basic.. not sure about certification.. @Sandra97 can u add both screenshots here ?

Overall I'd give them all a reboot around a common theme. I like what we have for social media we can carry the theme over to the newsletters as well ?

It's using the Certification newsletter template as a basis with some changes in order to stay consistent with the jdotorgtemplate.

I like it overall except maybe I wouldn't use 2 banners of the same size (primary banner) & the secondary banner being in the same size with so less content in between.. but that's on the content I guess.. that can be flexible

I looked at the sizes if the banners - they don't really fit the newsletter properly.
can we work on the sizes?
and I think it will be too busy to put all of them.
@anibalsanchez
I suggest using -
Button - 160 x 160 - I would suggest to make this one 200*200 if possible and use 2 of them one next to another.
and also add if needed another big banner like the
Leaderboard - 728x90 only making it 600 height on which ever height you want.
Is that solving the issue?

Hi Shirat,

  • The ad sizes are mainly following the standard IAB sizes: https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/185665. The newsletter format should have the option to accommodate some of them.

  • At this time, we have to insert 3 Ad Buttons 125x125, with an associated text of 100-180 chars. I'm sending you the Ads in Glip.

  • Overall, your design looks amazing, with a twist to the branding/institutional side. In our case, we need to orient it to send news, with spaces to insert ads between articles or on the sidebar.

  • About the social channels, please, keep the references to the general J channels.

Hi,

The Joomla 3.7 sample image looks low resolution. Also the overall impact when converted from PSD to HTML seems lost. Also i strongly recommend not using big images next to each other.. Always try and space out by text. Makes it easier on the eyes for the user reading..

Also i found some examples from the past that we had sent via Mailchimp. This will give examples of how the banner image could change as per context and some layout examples maybe..

Ok so thought i will use my fantastic (Horror!) design skills in Mailchimp to put something together. It could be total trash so please excuse me if it is (though mailchimp makes it really hard to make it horrible!) Check the link so you can check how it looks as responsive etc

jnewsletter

http://mailchi.mp/e6a26181a624/joomla-is-going-to-rome

You can see it here. I have also added some sample ad formats. @Sandra97 Could also work for J.org .. I just wrote a sample mock newsletter for it..

I think we can work a little bit more on the ads in the bottom. To make them look right but this size would look better than 125X125 @anibalsanchez ..

@shirdesign Could you see if we can format the content something like this ? Gives it a bit more variety i think ..

Thoughts ?

@anibalsanchez we can find one from your link that fits closer.. but I'd not want to do 3 in the bottom row ..they need to be a little more elegant or the newsletter will seem too full of ads.. since newsletter max widths are around 600px , 2 ads with 200-250 px width with paddings should work well and scale well on responsive

Great!

I'm wondering if JED team has to define the newsletter content... or if it's better to keep it centralized on the marketing team... at the end of the day, it is the same information sent in the "What's new in Joomla!" newsletter, but with a twist for extension developers.

We could coordinate a monthly meeting to define the newsletter content. After the definition, we send it from JED server.

@anibalsanchez Personally I think you should focus on the content for extension developers and questions / news that production has to them. So it should be a separate one .. And the marketing has not the resources to take care of that at the moment.

@anibalsanchez @parthlawate the template is not fully responsive as it has 2 columns and @Sandra97 & I tried to fix the responsiveness of it with not much luck. if we change the stracture other things looks bad.
BUT - we did test it in a few mobile/ tablet machines and on different mail severs.
that as far as the template goes.

@aDaneInSpain thanks:)
about your comments:

  • Headline: change "Sponsor" to "Sponsors" - no problem - at this point @anibalsanchez should be able to do it before he sends the first mail out...
  • Top ad should also have a headline - that's the text I had... pls send the headline so it can be inserted.
  • About the space and the margin - I tried many solutions for that - but it just looks different in every e-mail provider. at one point Sandra or I will re-write the whole template - starting from scratch - but its going to take a while...

@anibalsanchez reminding you again what @aDaneInSpain asked -
Also, please remember that we need to re-generate the actual ads no more than one week before sending it.

This is Mailchimp ... right? Acymailing has different template structure.
As I said - the template needs to be written from scratch.
I based my template on Sandra's one... and I really don't have the time to write it from scratch at this point - I hope I will get to it before JWC.... but can't promise anythings - and as Anibale wants to send the newsletter beginning of Sep it won't help.
I suggest either use the template as it is now - or decide not to use 2 columns for the first few templates and then I can make a quick fix within about a week.

@anibalsanchez Pls let me know how to continue from here.
