HOW TO USE THE SCRIPT: -1) Read the WHOLE file please, its name is not a mere coincidence! Specially the Known Issues. 0) For Ubuntu users, you need to set up a debian chroot first: su debootstrap --arch i386 sid ./sid-root http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian #Choose nearest mirror. mv /pathto/crunch-debianlive sid-root mount -o bind /proc sid-root/proc mount -o bind /dev sid-root/dev chroot sid-root cd crunch-debianlive 1) Read the script "ldcb" and adapt important configurations to suit your needs. Ensure you have enough free space to complete build process (up to 2GB), and partition isn't mounted noexec or nodev 2) Build (Can take a couple of hours, depending on computer and conection speed) ./ldcb (AS ROOT) 2.b) If build process fails without errors you may need to retry: cd build sudo lh_build (now image appears as binary.img in working dir) 3.a) Write to USB (all data will be lost in the device!! be carefull!): dd if=images/[distrib]-ldcb.img of=/dev/sdX bs=1M (AS ROOT) 3.b) Enable persistency in usb drive (optional): fdisk /dev/sdX (and create a new primary partition) partprobe (just in case kernel doesn't reread the new partition table, ie, cannot access to new partition) mkfs.ext2 -L live-rw /dev/sdX2 4) Reboot and choose boot option Live 5) Customizing -Tweaking it is quite easy by just changing variables at the beggining of the script 'ldcb'. Most interesting ones are the architecture, the distribution, the installer and the language. Also bootline is an important setup for the live image. Customize it to suit your needs. -To see full package list used see ./lists/crunchbang and hooks for your distribution and base. For customizing program's behaviour have a look at ./includes/chroot_local-includes/etc/ -Flash non-free is installed because of yet obvious performance problems in both gnash and sfwdec. If non-free drivers like nvidia are required, please, look at ./hooks/opt directory and copy the one needed in ./hooks/base, so it will be accesible to any distribution built. If no hook exists for you, please, figure out from the examples how to build yours. It's relatively easy when you know how to do it manually, though might need testing for completely automating the process. FILES IN THE ARCHIVE: ./README ./ldcb : live debian-based crunchbang main script. Tweak configuration here. ./includes : directory hierarchies which will be copied to both the new system and the binary image ./hooks : scripts to execute during build process, after installing all packages in lists ./lists : lists that contain all packages to be installed. ./localdebs : directory that contain local packages, as custom kernel or non official ones. ./images : stores built images. ./build : working directory. Will be created if not exists. CHANGELOG: 28/Sep/2009: Fixed some errors on amd64, now builds without no problem (running kernel must support amd64 instructions). Non-free hooks have been moved to non-free directory. If you want them, you must set this option in configuration variables. Openoffice is not included by default, just add 26/Sep/2009: Apparently, ALL configuration issues are solved for Sid (should apply also to the rest, not tested). Openbox menu rearranged. 25/Sep/2009: Solved all problems with locales and other minor configuration issues. 22/Sep/2009: Tried solving installation to hdd, needs the sid debian installer. Method explained at http://lists.debian.org/debian-live/2009/08/msg00029.html Disabled because it's not working properly. 21/Sep/2009: First full version is out! Bugs will appear soon... KNOWN ISSUES: - Sometimes, script fails to build image. Try cd-ing to build dir and enter 'lh_build' as root. It can be necessary a couple of times. - Live usb image tends to mount local partitions in the future, so after rebooting, a fsck is oblied. I've tried to solve it to no avail yet. - Debootstrap tends to fail quite often when targeting unstable distribution, and from time to time when targeting testing distribution as well. - Failure on debian installer when booting from usblive. USB images cannot be installed to hard disk yet. Use cdrom (iso) images instead. - Qemu definitively doesn't like working with openbox and Xorg reboots after starting openbox session. This might be related with Xorg visual modes configuration, but never tried to configure. This distribution is not meant to be virtualized, though would be good for debugging. - As of today, mplayer and vlc are broken on sid and squeeze, so totem is installed instead. - KMS enabled kernels fail to boot, kernel oops just when generating AUFS rootfilesystem. When installed on hard disk same kernel for intel chips works OK. TODO: -Add Zenity support for graphical user customization. -Make a short manual of utilities easily accesible, like Super-h. Now, just read configuration files accesible from desktop menu by typing Super-Espace or in /etc/skel -Improve system-update script to make it update package lists in background and only suggest upgrading if it's really necesary. A notification message is also a good idea instead of terminal based, so Zenity can be an easy and handy option. -Improve rebuilding process, as now build directory is removed between different builds and keeping cache dir would be a good time saving.
