Why does the value of location.hash change when I try to access it?

The Location object itself seems to have the right value when it is inspected, but when I try and access the attribute in code it is changed?

How can I access the hash of the link I just clicked.. not the page I just came from?

$('#categoryDeals').live('pagebeforecreate', function(event) {
  var html;
  console.log(event.delegateTarget.documentURI);
  console.log(event.delegateTarget.URL);
  console.log(FC.utils.getHashParameterByName("category"));
  console.log(window.location.hash);
  console.log(window.location);
  html = ich.t_deal_category_list();
  $(html).trigger('create');
  $(this).html(html);
});
