pagebeforechange + native back button causes inconsistent state #5265

I put together a small demo of a history-less zone. In my application I'm trying to using something similar for a gallery overlay.

When using links alone to navigate into and out of that zone everything works perfectly. In the demo you can click the page 3 link and the exit link many times over and #page-3 is never a visible history state, nor shown in the address bar. But, if you are in the history-less zone and click a native back button, the pagebeforechange event doesn't seem to be completely preventable. The URL history state goes one step further than the page state. In the demo, native back on page 3 results in the URL of page 1 and viewing page 2.
