Given private_method_error.rb:

class ClassWithoutMethodMissing
  private

  def foo
  end
end

class ClassWithMethodMissing
  private

  def foo
  end

  def method_missing(name, *args)
    super
  end
end

def call_private_method(klass)
  instance = klass.new
  instance.foo
rescue => e
  puts e.inspect
end

call_private_method(ClassWithoutMethodMissing)
call_private_method(ClassWithMethodMissing)

On MRI the error always indicates that it is a private method:

$ chruby 1.9.3
$ ruby -v
ruby 1.9.3p448 (2013-06-27 revision 41675) [x86_64-darwin12.4.0]
$ ruby private_method_error.rb
#<NoMethodError: private method `foo' called for #<ClassWithoutMethodMissing:0x007f820304fd08>>
#<NoMethodError: private method `foo' called for #<ClassWithMethodMissing:0x007f820304fa88>>
$ chruby 2.0
$ ruby -v
ruby 2.0.0p247 (2013-06-27 revision 41674) [x86_64-darwin12.4.0]
$ ruby private_method_error.rb
#<NoMethodError: private method `foo' called for #<ClassWithoutMethodMissing:0x007fad9b108ec0>>
#<NoMethodError: private method `foo' called for #<ClassWithMethodMissing:0x007fad9b108c40>>
$ chruby 2.1
$ ruby -v
ruby 2.1.0dev (2013-12-20 trunk 44301) [x86_64-darwin12.0]
$ ruby private_method_error.rb
#<NoMethodError: private method `foo' called for #<ClassWithoutMethodMissing:0x007fc785090b88>>
#<NoMethodError: private method `foo' called for #<ClassWithMethodMissing:0x007fc785090930>>

On JRuby if method_missing is defined (even if it's just super, which should not affect the behavior of the class), it changes from saying it's a private method to saying it's an undefined method:

$ chruby jruby
$ ruby -v
jruby 1.7.8 (1.9.3p392) 2013-11-14 0ce429e on Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609 [darwin-x86_64]
$ ruby private_method_error.rb
#<NoMethodError: private method `foo' called for #<ClassWithoutMethodMissing:0x6e681db8>>
#<NoMethodError: undefined method `foo' for #<ClassWithMethodMissing:0x552297d7>>
