I see from some semi-related bugs that JRuby 9000 might be going to change how thread statuses are done, so this might need to wait until then.

But as it stands at the moment (JRuby 1.7.11, but I've looked through master as well) IO#select won't change the thread status while it's waiting -- it's left on "run". If there's any interest, I can probably try and fix this, but I haven't ever actually built JRuby from source, so it could be a while.
