I think RemoteWebDriver is getting put off by the first error returned by the HTTP Get. When we use
    wget --server-response http://localhost:8080/wd/hub/status
I've noticed the command sometimes fails with a read error. wget seems to automatically retry and eventually succeeds. However, maybe RemoteWebDriver doesn't retry, hence the error we get in the test results. So we'll try the wget again after running the tests to see what behaviour we experience from WebDriver in the AVD.
