It would be really great if we could have a editor with buttons for bold, italic, etc for markdown - similar to how the github editor is

This would make things simpler for users who haven't used markdown before

Well, it would be great if it was a toolbar which auto renders the code.
Like I can just single click on a markdown cell and start typing on it. If I need a header then I should have a header button or so to convert what I'm typing to header.

Basically, simple users should not even know markdown. They should only see the rendered text and directly edit the rendered text.
Advanced users could see the markdown

Hi there, I was trying to enable this plugin for jupyter lab

https://github.com/genepattern/jupyter-wysiwyg

Does anyone know how to make this work on jupyter lab?

Note there was some conversation about this here: https://discourse.jupyter.org/t/default-action-for-md-files/728

I'm a big fan of either WYSIWYG or hackmd-style buttons for editing.

I agree, if it's desired to have this feature in base JupyterLab, it seems to make the most sense to just merge the extension from CalPoly into JupyterLab master.

I would love to see this evertually end up in JupyterLab core, but I think more work is needed because of the upcoming (very non-trivial) work on real time collaboration. I know that prosemirror was built with RTC in mind, but we will want to dive deep into that. Because of that, I think the best approach for now is as a separate repo on the jupyterlab org, with a long term plan of migrating it into core.
