I purposefully installed lots of extensions to demonstrate this. Lots of extensions will eventually result in an unusable UI since the tabs simply leave the viewable window. This is partly solved by #3707, and the right sidebar mentioned in that issue.

Maybe an overflow tab/button the opens/closes a second row of the sidebar. Or just display a second row of the sidebar.

Is there any way to hide certain tabs? I personally really feel like the "tabs" tab is useless (maybe it could be combined with "running" into an "open" tab especially if the resulting tab could expand/collapse the headers {termal/kernels/tabs} within that tab).

Also, since most of the tabs are identified with text, it gets very hard for me to locate the thing that I'm looking for. If the words are different lengths I can find them fine, but if not I, find myself tilting my head to try to read the labels.

I am working on this for the 0.34 release. Not sure how much of this will have time to get done:

  • Design changes - maybe smaller font, but most importantly, moving to an icon base tab rendering
  • Ways of moving tabs between the R/L sidebar.

But yeah, this is getting to be a big issue.

Would a menu under view or Window that toggle the display of each tab be sufficient? At least this is what the adobe family of tools uses because they have way more panels and toolbars to be displayed all at the same time.

I would suggest that we

  1. Rename Tabs to Window
  2. List side panels under Window and allow users to toggle the display of them.

I was thinking a setting with would allow me to disable specific sidebar panels (true, false, or auto), but a menu option would be much more user friendly. A window menu sounds great.
