Alternative (non-barcode) lookup methods

Hi,

using https://odesli.co/ I can get a (rough, but tends to be pretty accurate) accumulation of where a track or album exists on other plaforms.

maybe there are other "song url collection" services as well?

at the very least, a good start would be automatically combining musicbrainz URLS to provided bandcamp URLs if they already exist and are already linked, without having to press the "add to lookup" button.

this is related to #35 , since soundcloud albums often link to external bandcamps or other URLs that might be able to be loadable as well

it looks like listenbrainz is just searching music provider backends (or at least the soundcloud one) with songname + artistname, which obviously doesn't work great but is what they're doing

Hi, I'm not sure whether I understand exactly what you are requesting. You mention several different aspects and ideas with which I partly agree, but can you please give concrete examples of what you want to achieve?

Do you mean musicbrainz.org/release/... URLs or the external links of a MusicBrainz release?

Yes. for example, given "burbank house - tsubi club" (track): https://tsubiclub.bandcamp.com/track/burbank-house harmony can successfully load it and look it up, but it doesn't find the associated musicbrainz release url https://musicbrainz.org/release/5dc26360-7dc1-46dd-8eea-c74956de3264 or the recording url https://musicbrainz.org/recording/94fbc611-5e49-4092-8e12-e22add96b964, nor does it find the associated deezer, itunes, spotify, or tidal links (I found all of these by plugging the soundcloud link into odesli (the bandcamp url into odesli didn't work for whatever reason))

No, I mostly mention odesli as an example/potential backend for what "metadata/song association plugins/backends" can look like. I offer the idonthavespotiy & the soundcloud linked other platforms to buy on as well.

I mean what harmony currently does, which is a bandcamp album such as "chichi - Niomi" is loaded into harmony, it (somehow??) find the musicbrainz ID that it asks to manually add with:

Release 4d63cfb1-452f-4474-9725-5dcdff210198 is already linked to this Bandcamp release (add to lookup)"

which then modifies the URL with a multi-backend association/search.

but the external links of a musicbrainz release can be a potential different association backend to find other platforms that a song is on to figure out further metadata updates.

What i'm asking for

I'm trying to ask for support to add multiple lookup/association backends:

• GTIN associations (this already exists)
• musicbrainz associated URLs associations (I'm not sure if this exists? eg get the spotify link from a known musicbrainz id)
• metadata lookups, look up a song by "{song/album} - {artist}" on platforms
• metadata association services such as odesli, idonthavespotify, etc
• platform-specific metadata associations, like soundcloud users linking their bandcamp

an easy start would probably be allowing me to add multiple URLs to a search? such as "I have all of these URLs and I want to load them all into a harmony search", similar to URLs such as this but without having to extract out the platform-specific ID:

That only works if the release already has the Bandcamp URL attached (or the same barcode, in the general code). Lookup by artist and title is not as reliable as by URL or GTIN, which should generally be unique identifiers (except in edge cases of course), so it hasn't been implemented so far.

Let me rearrange and number your suggestions for alternative lookup methods:

1. GTIN
   • manual input
   • extraction from looked up release
2. URL
   • manual input, multiple URLs allowed
   • extraction of supported URLs from the looked up release
     • external links from MusicBrainz
     • links from SoundCloud (e.g. for Bandcamp, but also for incompatible physical releases)
3. Metadata (release title/artist, medium format, track count, catalog numbers etc.)
   • manual input
   • extraction from the looked up release
4. Extract supported URLs from link aggregators (less useful once we have our own metadata lookup)
   • Odesli
   • idonthavespotify

Lookup of automatically extracted URLs or metadata should be optional and be enabled by a checkbox.
Maybe we even have to make automatic GTIN lookups optional as well, for cases where it interferes with the rest of the data. Currently the GTIN lookup option is equivalent to the provider checkboxes.

This is already possible when you construct the Harmony lookup URL by hand. You can simply repeat the url query parameter multiple times. The only part which is missing is the UI on the lookup page to add a new URL input field.

To summarize, we have a lot of good ideas here which deserve their own tickets. As you said, having a dynamic number of URL inputs would be a good start, then we can continue with lookup methods 2, 3 and 4 (eventually).

Was just about to suggest odesli as a way to find more links but seems someone was quicker! Just wanna say that it seems like odesli/songlink has some kind of API to find the song links
