Today, much of this has changed. Each of the main platforms has gone some of the way --- in some cases a long way --- toward remedying its main defects. I would characterize the changes this way:
\begin{itemize}
- \item Windows dominates the market. Its most widely-available version, Windows XP, is stable and relatively secure. Because of its market dominance, far more viruses and malware target Windows than any other OS. Design and usability problems have been somewhat ameliorated. The launch of Windows Vista has not been terribly successful, though it's problems do not seem to be ones related to security.

\item Mac OS X runs only on Apple hardware, but Apple has moved all of its computers over to Intel chipsets. This has two consequences for those considering a move to Mac OS X. First, one can now make direct hardware and price comparisons between Apple computers and PC alternatives (such as Dells, Lenovos, etc). In general, the more similarly kitted-out a PC is to an Apple machine, the more the price difference between the two goes away.\footnote{Such a comparison should still take account of remaining differences in hardware design, and of course the OS itself.} However, Apple does not compete at all price-points in the market, so it will always be possible to configure a cheaper PC (with fewer features) than Apple sells. For the same reason, it is also easier to find a PC configuration precisely tailored to any particular set of specific preferences (e.g., with a better display but without some other feature or other) than may be available from Apple.
