data_migrations

A rails plugin to allow you to isolate data fixes & transforms from schema changes.

Why?

Migrations should be runnable from a fresh project checkout and a blank database. The problem with migrations that change data is that they are often dependant on the state of the codebase at the time they are run.

The data_migrations plugin creates a separate folder db/data_migrations to store these data fixes and a data_migrations table comparable to schema_info. It reuses most of the standard Rails migration functionality, so you can do pretty much anything with them you can do with migrations.

Usage

script/plugin install git://github.com/knaveofdiamonds/data_migrations.git

script/generate data_migration my_migration

edit db/data_migrations/timestamp_my_migration.rb just like a normal migration

rake db:data_migrations:apply

Versions

This plugin is for Rails 2.3.5 - it almost certainly doesn't work on Rails 3.

Note on Patches/Pull Requests

  • Fork the project.

  • Make your feature addition or bug fix.

  • Add tests for it. This is important so I don't break it in a future version unintentionally.

  • Commit, do not mess with rakefile, version, or history. (if you want to have your own version, that is fine but bump version in a commit by itself I can ignore when I pull)

  • Send me a pull request. Bonus points for topic branches.
