Systems with libSDL2.so seem to have libSDL2-2.0.so.0, but those without only have libSDL2-2.0.so.0

For posterity's sake, on Gentoo:

ls -lash /usr/lib/libSDL2*
   0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   20 Mar  4 06:41 /usr/lib/libSDL2-2.0.so.0 -> libSDL2-2.0.so.0.8.0
1.1M -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1.1M Mar  4 06:41 /usr/lib/libSDL2-2.0.so.0.8.0
4.0K -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.5K Mar  4 06:41 /usr/lib/libSDL2main.a
4.0K -rw-r--r-- 1 root root  975 Mar  4 06:41 /usr/lib/libSDL2main.la
   0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   20 Mar  4 06:41 /usr/lib/libSDL2.so -> libSDL2-2.0.so.0.8.0
268K -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 267K Mar  4 06:41 /usr/lib/libSDL2_test.a
4.0K -rw-r--r-- 1 root root  978 Mar  4 06:41 /usr/lib/libSDL2_test.la

Smells like a Desktop Linux Platform Issue. Can you propose a short text that could be put on that list? Thanks.

More likely that the .so is tucked away in the -dev package, as it technically is only used by the linker (i.e., gold/bfd) during link time to find the right active symver to link against and put in DT_NEEDED.

Hence why that can't be an issue in source distro ;).
