New OS window hangs under Wayland

During my annual tradition of trying to move to Wayland I noticed that the following command freezes and doesn't launch a new window:

$ kitty @ new-window --window-type os

The frozen window doesn't react on anything and can only be killed with kill -9.

kitty @ new-window works fine.

Both commands work as expected under X11. I can reproduce with an empty .zshrc and kitty.conf.

$ kitty --debug-gl
GL version string: '4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 19.3.2' Detected version: 4.6

Not sure what else to try...
