On Shield TV v3.2:

Skin shortcuts and skin helper service updates fail.

Resolution shows two options for 3840x2160p (and nothing else).

Nice addition for easy log file uploading. Could you please address this security issue?

Will you loop back code for Kitkat eventually? Or will 16.4.2 be the last version to support Kitkat?

Are there any specific settings you need to set to get 4K resolution in Youtube Dash?
Android resolution set to 4k? Only certain devices with real 4K resolution not 1080p frame-buffer?
The maximum resolution a lot of people get is 1080p.

@99rook99

Just a guess but I would say KitKat is done. He probably needs the newer api's, of course I could be completely wrong. I would think that he would have liked to move it forward to Marshmallow but didn't. This just gives me a reason to upgrade my other boxes

@wesk05 I assume you actually selected a 4K resolution, right?

Selected 4K resolution, where? AFTV2 doesn't have any option to select 4K resolution. It is "Auto" or 1080p/720p. If I select 4K in SPMC, 1080p is upscaled and output in 4K. With MrMC, it switches to 4K resolution when 4K content is played and remains in 1080p for 1080p content. Is this not to be expected from this test build?

Inside SPMC. But yeah, switching should happen automatically.

Yes, my TV will switch to 4K from 1080p. Works fine with MrMC on AFTV2, Odroid C2 LibreELEC, x86 LibreELEC etc.

If you want to compare, I will get you a debug log from MrMC some time later today.

You cannot run SPMC 16.4.8 (in the background) at the same time as 16.4.2. If you do so, you will get an error that the common cache failed to load. After that, SPMC 16.4.2 will then crash ("SPMC has stopped") though 16.4.8 doesn't seem to.

In other words, you must expressly use the quit function first to alternate between test and production SPMC versions. You can't go to Leanback Launcher inadvertantly.

ADD: 4K on AFTV2
How should the wiki be updated, post 16.5? Does AFTV2 support only 4K video or now 4K GUI like the Shield. Does it also support HQ scalers? (Unfortunately, I don't have an AFTV2 to test it with...)

ADD: DASH support (aka 1080p/4K youtube)
Since the Shield includes Youtube already in 4K, this isn't as valuable for us as, say, AFTV users. However, can the same functionality now enable Amazon Videos, which is the one app missing on the Shield?

Maximum still 1080p in Youtube Dash
User tested with a 4K LG OLED TV, set Android resolution to 4K@60hz and uses a 200mbps+ connection.
Only resolution seen in Youtube Dash Settings are 720p & 1080p, no 4K and while playing it also stays at 1080p
Can someone test this video or see if they have 4K resolution setting in Youtube Dash and what bitrate is reported?

Would also like to provide feedback on my FTV2. But I really cant even get the .81 version to start when data is set to external SD via spmc_env.properties . I let it start after install and that works. Then I exit the app, renamed the com.semperpax.spmc16 folder on SD to ...spmctest and changed the path in the properties file.

Afterwards the app tries to start, but I get kicked to homescreen immediately. Do I need to set up everything from scratch?

yes, 720p resolution is set inside SPMC. When it switches back to 720p from 2160p, the GUI is scaled incorrectly. It is zoomed in (probably at 1080p).

Might be an Android layout issue...

@wesk05
wesk05 commented Sep 3, 2016

@koying It is fine if I go to FireTV 2 home and come back to SPMC. So, it seems to be an Android layout issue like you mentioned. I did the 720p test only because MrMC asked me to try it. I am not sure how may will actually set the GUI to 720p.

@mrdally204

Been using this latest build side by side with stable SPMC. I do like it a lot, but can I make a request? Please change the icon for test builds to i can tell without launching which is which :). Thanks again, the fps change for fire tv 2 is great. I didn't realize how bad it was before!

@mrdally204

Another side effect to refresh rate switching, when going back to the UI it switches again. I looked and only saw a 50 and 60hz option for the kodi interface. Would it be possible to launch movie > tv switches to refresh rate > stop movie > SPMC stays at its last supported rate (movie rate) and only switch again if content is played with a different rate? It would really improve the experience, especially when watching smaller clips and the tv continues switching each start and stop.

@semool
semool commented Oct 3, 2016

thats not a good idea @mrdally204 . i dont want the gui @24p when i stop a movie.

@mrdally204

Options my friend. While you don't want 24p UI, I'm not a huge fan of my tv switching at the end of each clip as it is quite disruptive especially if you are watching clip after clip. If we had a choice to keep 50/60 or last switched hz that wouldn't affect your preference :). Now if it's a stupid amount of work for that little payoff I agree it is bad idea.

@BigFishStudios

Tested this build on AFTV2. I can set the Format to 4k and looks great.
Can we build it so that it uses 4k only when playing a 4k video? I see some comments above, but this is what the AFTV2 does for everything, including it's own playback of 4k.

@DaMacFunkin

Hello, i have AFTV2 connected to a 1080p tv.
On 16.5 if i playback a 3D sbs file i can't get the picture and overlay to match even if i turn off refresh rate switching and set gui to 60HZ,
What i mean is when i play the 3d file, i am then asked what is the format, i choose same as movie (sbs) the gui switches to split screen, but the movie in the background plays in 2d (full screen).
If i choose 2d monoscopic then the movie plays split screen which is correct, my tv turns to 3D (mixes the screens) but now the gui is mixed if i press the enter button.
On spmc 16.4.2 with the same file and same settings this works perfectly, i choose same as movie, and both the movie and gui become split screen, then 3D mode enables on the tv and the signal mixes perfectly.

@DaMacFunkin

Just to add i have tested the above with 16.4.81 on the Nvidia Shield TV set to 24hz and and the 3D gui switching works as it should, so it seems just a problem with AFTV(2).

@Sholi1982

Does anybody have issues playing x265 files on spmc 16.5. All my files crash unless I deselect the acceleration on media codecs. Surely this isn't normal. Never had this issue on any other builds or versions of kodi.

@DaMacFunkin

Does anybody have issues playing x265 files on spmc 16.5. All my files crash unless I deselect the acceleration on media codecs. Surely this isn't normal. Never had this issue on any other builds or versions of kodi.
Which box, different boxes require different settings.
Don't forget certain things are enabled in SPMC 16.5 that are not in other versions of kodi.

@Sholi1982

Hi sorry, it's a FireTv gen1. Only way to get x265 working is to disable all acceleration on media types.

@DaMacFunkin

That's because fire tv gen 1 doesn't support hardware H265 decoding, any playback you may have is being done in software.
The reason you did not have this problem in other builds is that hardware acceleration wasn't actually enabling on AFTV1 even if you switched it on.

@Sholi1982

Right that makes sense.
Would there be a way to get x265 to play via software and leave all other media types to play the accelerated settings or is this not possible to do?
Otherwise I'd have to disable everything to put it back to software only for all files for x265 to play, correct?

@DaMacFunkin

Only koying can answer that I don't know, but he needs to fix my 3D gui problem on AFTV2 first lol.

@DaMacFunkin

I have to say I have been playing a x265 3D file that I encoded my self on 16.4.81 via Nvidia shield and it looked terrible, really soft and blurred I initially thought I had made a mess with the encode, I tried the same file in kodi 17 beta 3 with same media codec settings and it looked superb.
Given the 3D gui problems I had on AFTV2 I may swerve using this till a newer build.

@DaMacFunkin

I have received the beta 3.3 shield experience if you need a new build testing Mr....

@DaMacFunkin

I have to say since i found Lancoz3 Optomised in the settings i have found X265 playback on the shield reasonable, i only thought there was Lancoz3.

@DaMacFunkin

What codec are the files, what are your mediacodec settings, are you trying to enable passthrough audio, help us out a bit...

@rainman74

every settings in video is at default, except playback mode is set to "resume". I think it could have to do with adjust display refresh rate = "always", the new SPMC feature.

@DaMacFunkin

@rainman74 are they HEVC files? Do they have AAC audio?
The Fire TV 1st gen is not very powerful and doesn't support hardware playback of lots of files.
Try turning mediacodec off in both instances.

@DaMacFunkin

@koying do you plan to have any love for Zidoo X9S?
Just testing a box, the default player is very good quality, with a bit of work (as with all android players) it could perform very well.

@rainman74

@DaMacFunkin no they aren't HEVC files (H264/AC3). The problem can be resolved, if I stop the files with no audio and restart them again, Then audio works perfectly! It's not a problem with the files, but with newest SPMC versions.

@Gertbucket

FireTV 4K 16.4.82: attempting to play any WMV instantly crashes back to the homescreen. I'd upload a log but the uploader add-on gives errors too. Suffice to say, it's repeatable and not an issue with SPMC proper or Kodi 17b5.

Installed it the other day and so far so good other than judder when watching 25p content and auto refresh rate switching setting the TV at 50hz. I had to use the advancedsettings.xml to tell it to leave the TV at 60hz for 25p content. It's not a big deal as it mostly matters for 24p movies which is working fine with no judder, just a little niggle knowing that 25p worked at 50hz with no judder on windows Kodi.

On AFTV2 and 1080p.

@DaMacFunkin

I doubt you are getting 25p, it is 25i and that is the problem, I think there is another line to add to the advanced settings so it outputs at 50hz correctly.

Unfortunately SPMC is not in a very good place right now.

The official release (16.4.2) frequently freezes video, continues audio, and becomes unresponsive, after skipping forward.

This build (16.4.82) freezes less (though still occasionally) but is terribly unstable - crashes merely trying to open some folders (then opens them fine next attempt), won't play a whole bunch of codecs (I've had problems playing WMV, DV, MPEG, etc), completely exits when attempting to play WMV.

MrMC and the most recent Kodi Krypton nightly seem to both be more stable than SPMC now, having none of the above issues.

We badly need a new release.

@koying One bug I have found in the RC, but as far as I remember it is already documented here as an issue. The IP button in the Keyboard has no function. Apart of that it is really brilliant work, thanks a lot :)

PS: as you are now also considering the Fire TV, please wouldn't it be possible to include a bigger App icon? Thats the only thing I'm missing with SPMC now (16.5.0. RC).
I know it is just the look and that there are other things on the priority list, still wanted to ask if it could maybe be considered

After disabling surface, I get "SPMC has stopped" every time I stop playback of a video. See plrqp8sjy and pbszm6mct

First: Package name is not different anymore 16.5.0 RC ;-)

Bug: 16.5.0 RC isn't working on Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, Android 6.0.1 (Re-Touched-Skin). 16.4.2 works flawlessly, but after starting 16.5.0 app directly jumps back to homescreen.

Current resolution: 2048x1536

This is the old log of working 16.4.2, 16.5.0 doesn't write a log, because it crashes instantly:

Separately: the lipsync delay improvements and less judder that I noted above appears primarily related to enabling surface v the HQ scaler.

@classicjazz hi classic, just for clarification for a 4K TV with Shield:

<enablehighqualityhwscalers>true</enablehighqualityhwscalers>
is in my advancedsettings.xml

turn Surface Off
OSD > Video Settings, Deinterlace Method and Video Scaling Method as per wiki

Then turn Surface back On or leave Off?

@DaMacFunkin

If you turn surface back on then the scalers turn off, you can't have both.
TBH there are players on the market now whose scaling is a lot better than the shield so it's use is becoming needed less.

@Gertbucket

@koying All good. Excellent work!

Well, disable "adjust refreshrate" if you don't want it. If you do want it, it's normal.

I'm having one problem with all SPMC 16 builds.
My device based on Amlogic S905X chipset.
SPMC interface is crashing every time the amlogic hardware acceleration is on.
I know I can turn it off but without it videos are much darker, grainier and some jittering occurs.
With amlogic on picture is very good and smooth.
It doesn't crash playing movies. Only when navigating interface.
I've heard that Kodi 17 does not include amlogic codec at all.
Does it mean that the new Amlogic chipset won't be supported anymore? That makes no sense.
Picture quality using mediacodec is much worse.

Would be so great if SPMC included a built-in crash logs uploader, so that you would just have to give me a log reference, wouldn't it?

Oh, wait...

Hi @koying I am happy with 16.4.2 on Nvidia Shield, do you think 16.5.0 RC will be better and provide more things? Should I start using it? or better wait until the final release?

@opengl1971

Using SPMC 16.5 RC1 ,There is an occasional stuttering during video playback (every 30-sec to 1 min)
(720p and 1080p video playback ) , i tried all possible
Video setting Combinations of changing refreshrate to match video and/or vsynch
But the stuttering still exists , to confirm if this is firmware 3.3 or spmc related i tried kodi 17
There was no stuttering with kodi 17 (I left this issue on the issues section sorry for duplication
But i felt that the issue belongs here as it is 16.5 related but couldn't delete the other one)

@DaMacFunkin

I presume from your coded message you are using the Nvidia shield.
Since 16.5 spmc only uses surface, if you have high quality scalers enabled, turn them off or turn off Surface.
This is posted already in this thread.

@opengl1971

To my understanding SPMC 16.5 still uses both: surface and mediacodec , only it defaults to surface
But you can still disable surface , enable mediacodec and HQ scalers along with it if you want
(You or koying can correct me if i am wrong here)

There's been an occasional bug, still present in 11/27 RC on the Nvidia Shield TV v3.3, that downgrades GUI from 2160 to 1080 resolution without user intervention. When this happens, you can go back to the settings menu and change it back. Instead of showing 3840x2160p twice (not sure why the same resolution is always repeated twice), it shows 1920x1080p twice and one 3840x2160p.

I uploaded a debug log but can't tell you the number because then I saw this....

@opengl1971

As for the stuttering issue still happens when HQ scalers are disabled , in fact it happens
Even if there is no scaling at all (1080p content to 1080p display)

@DaMacFunkin

Have you changed the setting in spmc to enable HQ scalers to never?

@classicjazz Would that happen when manually changing between 4K and 1080p? With refresh rate switching?

@classicjazz

@koying All settings are per the 4K Shield Wiki. I usually quit SPMC after I am finished watching a video. SPMC is downgrading to 1080 when starting the app. The only other app I have been regularly using is the HDhomerun DVR.

It just did it again. I uploaded the log: p6trxoxyu
This time, I don't have the option to change the resolution or refresh rate. Both settings are greyed out.

Sorry, no i didn't. And I had rebooted the Shield less than 4 hours earlier due to the hang noted above.

Also HDMI CEC is disabled.

@saalaataa

@koying Just a small suggestion from my side as I just begun to test 16.5.0. As I still have latest stable release on my AFT2 and previous beta 16.4.82 installing 16.5.0 caused 3rd SPMC instance to appeared on my menu. Would it be possible if you all betas to be upgraded and not creating ne instance. Also small beta indication on the icon / or different icon color would be most helpful for all AFT2 users. To the icon itself, would next stable release have higher res icon, as current one looks a little blurry on my device?

Thanks for the great fork and keeping the project alive.

Cheers

Hi there,

using SATV on a 4k TV i am still on SPMC 16.2.
Short question, ist the Framerate "bug" solved, so that i can watch 1080p in ycbcr in 24p without falling back to RGB an 1080p 60hz?

Strangely, I installed this release SPMC-20161127-0390d07-spmc-jarvis-armeabi-v7a.apk and it overwrote the installed 16.4.2. In case of instability, can I revert back to 16.4.2?

@rainman74

yes, with "adb install -r -d ..." (d for downgrade)
or deinstall -> new install

@showmak
showmak commented Nov 30, 2016 edited

Can't I just re install 16.4.2? Won't that overwrite 16.5.0? I am not happy with 16.5.0, I see video stutters.

EDIT:
I tried re install but it didn't work. Really frustrated!
I don't want to lose my settings and data, how can I safely downgrade without losing my data?

@rainman74
rainman74 commented Nov 30, 2016 edited

adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb connect 192.xxx.xxx.xxx
adb install -r -d SPMC-armeabi-v7a_16.4.2.apk
adb disconnect

-r means: reinstall without losing data
-d means: allow downgrade
