Cannot start Kubernetes 1.5.0 cluster on AWS #38728

Downloaded 1.5.0 release, ran cluster/get-kube-binaries.sh, started the cluster as KUBERNETES_PROVIDER=aws ./cluster/kube-up.sh

Cluster keeps waiting even after 30 mins:

Some time just before the 1.5.0 cut, something horribly broke the kube-up.sh deployment for AWS. Unfortunately, that got lost in a bunch of other noise in the AWS testing at the same time, and other fires to put out. It's still broken in master, and probably won't be fixed until 1.5.2 at the earliest.

kube-up.sh is deprecated for AWS and only receives occasional updates (ideally when things break). I'd recommend looking into kops, though we haven't released a version that will deploy 1.5.0 yet (it's available in the kops master branch, but that involves building from source.)

Some time just before the 1.5.0 cut, something horribly broke the kube-up.sh deployment for AWS. Unfortunately, that got lost in a bunch of other noise in the AWS testing at the same time, and other fires to put out. It's still broken in master, and probably won't be fixed until 1.5.2 at the earliest.

The kops release schedule lags slightly behind the main Kubernetes release schedule. There should be a kops release within the next 24-48hrs that will have 1.5.x as an option. (We're cutting a 1.5.1 soon for a separate issue, and that will be the first version kops picks up.)

Does that mean two separate releases need to be downloaded in order to start a cluster on AWS?

I prefer an integrated approach of one build as that's simpler and intuitive.

@arun-gupta: You don't need to download the k8s release if you just download kops. It will handle all the upgrades and release management for you.

@arun-gupta: kops sits at a similar level to the bash scripts (kube-up.sh, etc) that are in the tree, or e.g. gcloud container clusters create for GKE, but (like GKE) it will handle the release download and deployment for you. You can kind of think of it like a kubectl for whole clusters.

Sorry, the previous question confused me. Great blog post! In general, we're in a transitory period for cluster lifecycle, so I would recommend pointing people to the AWS getting-started documentation and we'll try to keep it up to date. I'm going to add a todo to make the deprecation warning for kube-up a bit more obvious, and clearly indicate it's on life-support right now.

Cannot start kubernetes cluster with version 1.5.1 on AWS
I used the following commands to setup cluster the disk size used less in value as this is for demo purposes
export KUBE_AWS_ZONE=us-west-2a

export NODE_SIZE=t2.micro
export AWS_S3_REGION=us-west-2
