gitRepo stopped accepting new features a while ago #17676 (comment) and today this behavior can easily be achieved through an init container. The kubelet shelling out to git on the host can also be a security issue on un-trusted repos.

What is the action item for 1.11 here? Just to announce the deprecation in the release notes?

Alternatively we could remove the gitRepo volume handling from the Kubelet, and instead inject an init container to setup the volume (e.g. https://gist.github.com/tallclair/849601a16cebeee581ef2be50c351841). Could this approach have backward compatability issues?

Merge pull request #62394 from jsafrane/revert-git-changes
Automatic merge from submit-queue (batch tested with PRs 60476, 62462, 61391, 62535, 62394). If you want to cherry-pick this change to another branch, please follow the instructions here.

Revert "git: Use VolumeHost.GetExec() to execute stuff in volume plugins"

This reverts commit c578542 (PR #51098). The PR added support for containerized git, on the other hand it required git 1.8.5. This breaks git volumes on older distros (CentOS 7, Ubuntu 14.04) that have old git.

Git volumes are getting deprecated (#60999) so we should restore it to the last working state and not touch it any longer.

**Release note**:

```release-note
gitRepo volumes in pods no longer require git 1.8.5 or newer, older git versions are supported too now.
```

I'd like to cherry-pick it into 1.10.

volumes: document alternates to the gitRepo volume type
Users are better served by not using the built-in gitRepo volume
type. Update the documentation to suggesting using an init
container instead.

core v1: deprecate the gitRepo volume type

gitRepo stopped accepting new features nearly 2 years ago #17676 (comment) and today this behavior can easily be achieved through an init container. The kubelet shelling out to git in the host namespace can also be a security issue on un-trusted repos, as was demonstrated by [CVE-2017-1000117](https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/kubernetes-announce/CTLXJ74cu8M). Our own documentation even alludes to this volume type being removed in the future:

> In the future, such volumes may be moved to an even more decoupled model, rather than extending the Kubernetes API for every such use case.

Closes #60999

```release-note-action-required
The GitRepo volume type is deprecated. To provision a container with a git repo, mount an EmptyDir into an InitContainer that clones the repo using git, then mount the EmptyDir into the Pod's container.
