I added a excerpt to the post but how can I force Casper to use them in the main blog post list page?

Working on allowing excerpts, should be available in the next version.

I recommend installing from http://wordpress.org/themes/casper/ to allow for automatic updates (of which there are plenty!)

Ha you are faster than I expected, go ahead and grab the install from wordpress.org. you should be able to turn on automatic updates. please let me know if you have issues
