Why is PostgreSQL more recommended than MySQL in Dify?General Discussion

We have more MySQL experts than PostgreSQL experts. So, I'd like to understand why PostgreSQL is more popular.

The main reason Dify is built around PostgreSQL is pgvector — the extension that enables vector embedding storage and similarity search, which is core to Dify's RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) capabilities. There's no MySQL equivalent that integrates as seamlessly. Specifically, Dify uses:

1. pgvector — stores embeddings as native vector columns, performs cosine-distance similarity searches (<=>), and builds HNSW indexes for efficient nearest-neighbor lookups [1].
2. JSONB — used heavily for flexible schema storage (agent configs, dataset metadata, credentials) with efficient querying operators [2].
3. Array types — native ARRAY columns for storing lists like plugin include/exclude sets [3].
4. Advanced full-text search — to_tsvector(), ts_rank(), and pg_bigm for fuzzy matching [4].
5. GIN indexes — for efficient indexing of JSONB and full-text search columns [5].

That said, Dify does have some MySQL compatibility in its Docker Compose configurations [6], but PostgreSQL is the primary, optimized, and recommended backend. The vector search functionality — arguably Dify's most important database-level feature for an AI platform — is tightly coupled to pgvector, which has no direct MySQL counterpart.

If your team has strong MySQL expertise, the operational knowledge (backups, replication, monitoring) transfers reasonably well to PostgreSQL. The SQL dialect differences are manageable. The bigger consideration is that switching to MySQL would mean losing the built-in vector store capability and needing an external vector database instead.
