How can I remove Chinese characters appearing in the input field?

When I start selecting options, Chinese characters appear in the input, like this:

I'd like to stop that. Setting showTextNumber to 100 has removed the intermediate characters showing how many selections I've made, but when I select all the options, I still see the corresponding characters.
