This is from my post on the Linux Mint forums - http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=103522&p=656457#p654212

I'm having the same issue on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS with Cinnamon 1.6.7 running FGRLX video drivers.

Issue:

I take a screenshot, and it creates and saves it in the ~/Pictures folder, but it's not a current screenshot. If I do the Cinnamon restart trick stated in an earlier post (focus on window you want - press Alt-F2 - type r - take screenshot) it does give me the latest screenshot, but the top window bar is missing. If I run gnome-screenshot from the terminal, it works but I get the same error as listed above:

** (gnome-screenshot:9443): WARNING **: Unable to use GNOME Shell's builtin screenshot interface, resorting to fallback X11. Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.Shell was not provided by any .service files

When I log out and log in using the standard Unity session, screenshots work as they should, with the save prompt.

Hi @cygnus8595
This issue was opened by @autarkper at #871
And was closed by @glebihan who said:
"gnome-screenshot can't connect to the shell service, that's expected since gnome-shell isn't running.
The pictures do however get saved into ~/Pictures".
However, as you rightly note, "it's not a current screenshot". And the Cinnamon restart trick is just silly.
What we need is a Screenshot utility for Cinnamon.
Or maybe something that will kick the current screen image from the graphics buffer into gnome-screenshot.
Alan

Since screenshots are a pretty basic part of any desktop manager, I agree that there needs to be a screenshot utility for Cinnamon.

I agree with you guys about having a good built-in. For now, you could try the Desktop Capture applet which I have been using daily without any issues. More info is available on the github page. There are also a few other screenshot applets available, though lighter on features.

Thanks, the applet works but it's a little slow. But it's better than getting a six-hour-old screenshot!

CORRECTION: It's still grabbing old screenshots. So it's just giving me a new interface for the same bug. Still, it's a nice applet and I'll keep it around to use once the screenshot bug is fixed.

Using AMD 13.1 drivers, I still have this problem. What's weird is that by using a NVIDIA computer, screenshots work just fine. It seems there is more to it than just shell services...

I'm having the same issue, except the issue also applies when I Skype's "Share Sceen" feature. It displays programs that are no longer open.

This issue is really annoying.

I thought it worth mentioning that this also affects gtk's GtkColorSelection widget.

Issue persists in Linux Mint Cinnamon 15 (64bit) with AMD legacy drivers 13.1.

Can you check if this issue exists in Cinnamon 2.2?

Yeah, this is still a problem. It sometimes works, but about half of the time I get the following error message after I take a screenshot. It only seems to be bad when I select a portion of my screen however...

┬─[william@fillory:~]
╰─>$ gnome-screenshot --interactive
** Message: Unable to select area using GNOME Shell's builtin screenshot interface, resorting to fallback X11.

@cygnus8595, is this still an issue for you with Cinnamon 3.4?
