It would be nice to have a "System Monitor" applet.
Both Gnome 2 applet and GnomeShell extension
of "System Monitor" already exist.

Starting from "system-monitor" GnomeShell extension
could be good point...

I have started porting it, it's 95%+ complete and functional, but I haven't got the skill to finish it.

Leigh -- what else needs doing?

The preference to move the clock is broken still (it should be removed IMO).

Works well for me -- thanks for your work on this. However, I can't tell what the pie chart in the popup window is supposed to be showing, nothing is labeled.

Also, it would be better to display "mem", "swap", "net" etc. inside each bar graph somehow (either in the background, or maybe xor'd over the top), because the applet takes up a lot of space on the panel, even with the graphs reduced to say 32 pixels in width...

Is this the same system monitor as the one here (cinnamon-extensions-system-monitor): https://launchpad.net/~merlwiz79/+archive/cinnamon-ppa ? It works well for me (well, the disk usage pie chart on the popup window is too big for 1024x600 [netbook], but it works)

There are already many system monitors in cinnamon-spices
