This has been an issue with GNOME 3, and is inherited to cinnamon (I haven't heard people ranting about it yet, though). Cinnamon, the DE, is tightly integrated with muffin, the window manager. It would be nice if the two are separated. My situation is that I find tiling managers (bluetile, in particular) more productive, especially when I need multiple terminals simultaneously running (one for emacs - no offense to vi/vim users - , one for viewing files etc.), but it is impossible to use cinnamon AND bluetile at the same time. I have to sometimes resort to xfce for the time being. Aero-snap is not sufficient for my purpose.
I know this is not an easy job and probably won't be done soon, but I'd like to know if it is considered and will it be implemented some day.

I'm not against it, but as far as I can see, Cinnamon doesn't just use Muffin, it IS a libmuffin. It extends it.

I'm closing this issue for now as we can reasonably assume this won't be done in the near future. I'd be interested to see what came from anybody who does R&D on this and looks at it in-depth, but I won't do it myself.. our goal is to produce a good desktop in the near future.. if it comes with compatibility with other WMs then even better, that would be a plus, but it's not something we'll actively work on ourselves.

Thanks for the quick reply.

You might try x-tile if you want to keep using cinnamon/gnome3. You could also try mate+bluetile, I would imagine that would work nicely (I am still using gnome2+bluetile on lmde, so I can't say for sure).
