[Feature request] Split view panel selection

Imagine you have a split pane Nemo (View > Extra Pane) and you have clicked in the left pane.

I would like to be able to double click on a folder/folder in the right pane to open it up. Currently one has to click three times when going between panes. One for selecting the pane and then double click to open the file/folder.

I think it is extra clicking for no apparent reason and also can be confusing.

You click anywhere on the right pane to select that pane.
Standard nemo clicking then applies to folders/files in that pane.
So you aren't actually triple clicking anything.

When you click anywhere on the pane and the double click that is 3 clicks. I should be able to just double click on a file/directory in the opposite pane and it should open up without first selecting the pane. The reasoning to select first the pane and then double click is not logical.

Just tried Dolphin [not used it before] - it works just like you say.
However, if I was using it, I would click on the pane (essentially to get feedback that I'm on the active pane), followed by a double-click on a folder.
Personally, I've got a strong preference for nemo - seems much smoother and gives me feedback whilst I'm using it.
Perhaps this feature could be provided as an option?
Then I could choose to default to current nemo behaviour?

I come from a Mac environment and I can say Nemo meets most of my needs. I use Pathfinder on Mac which is probably one of the best File managers on any platform (costs money and I would buy it if there was anything like it for Linux Desktops). https://cocoatech.com/#/

After checking out a few file managers, seems Nemo is by far the best on Linux. I wouldn't switch to anything else over this. But small things that enhance usability can help. For most people dual pane is an absolute need and the simpler it is to use, the better.

If it makes sense, and it can be made to an option, it can save extra clicks.

I find this 'feature' of getting feedback of pane changing (as Jeremy7701 describes it) to be very confusing, and it keeps biting me. The main problem is that things aren't consistent: Depending on whether you're on the left or right pane, it either needs one extra click or not. I need to mentally exert effort to decide whether or not to, essentially, insert an extra click into my workflow. Whenever I fail to do this, I'm confused for a second as to why my action didn't do anything. This has been a frustration for over 2 years and it's not something I can get used to.

File managers like Total Commander and Krusader also don't do this.

If a panel or window is not the active one, then you can issue a single click to make it so.
You can then carry out your double click action against the newly active panel.
The active pane is a very slightly different colour to that of the inactive pane - admittedly not a very obvious clue.

I sometimes find similar "issues" copying and pasting between multiple terminal windows.

1. You're missing the point (again). I want to always click the same amount of times regardless of which pane is selected.
2. There's no color clue for the active pane. I took a screenshot with the active pane left, and one with the active pane right, layered them with Difference, merged layers, and it's 100% black (entire image is 1 color)
3. Worse, and I forgot to mention it earlier today: When you use the forward/backward buttons on the mouse, the pane doesn't change and the active pane (even if it's the opposite one from where you click) goes back or forward.

Maybe its a theme-sensitive thing, but mine is different...
