About the Site

One More Voice is hosted on GitHub. The site is published under a Creative Commons license; all our files and data are free for others to adapt and reuse as needed in any non-commercial context.

One More Voice is an imprint of Livingstone Online, meaning that the former shares the ideals, includes team members, and draws on the development experience of the latter. Image and transcription data created for the One More Voice project is also automatically integrated into the digital collection of Livingstone Online.

However, One More Voice has been built on the principals of minimal computing. Our site prioritizes content, and we have worked to develop an interface that is simple and as universal in its design as possible.

At this stage, there are no plans to create a print version of the site. Users, however, can download PDF and plain text files of all the works we publish and print them out as needed. We encourage and welcome the use of our materials in any educational context.

Overview of the Project

One More Voice is an open-access recovery project. We seek to find and publish narratives and other texts by individuals who lived as subjects with the confines of the British Empire, especially in the nineteenth century. Our site, which is now in its prototype phase, currently includes diaries, travel narratives, testimonies, letters, and autobiographical pieces.

Many such texts were once lost, buried in archives, or otherwise forgotten. Our project has identified them and started producing user-friendly versions of these works for the public. Ultimately, we hope easy access to the texts will transform how scholars, teachers, and others around the world think about the British Empire and about the stories that can be told about the Empire.
