Immersive data visualisation techniques allow exploring datasets within a rich 3D environment. we made a VR project from our own interior design files representing a family apartment, as well as 3D models generated from open data sources.
This project, started at NZZ VR Hackdays, was designed in Blender - where data was visualised using the built-in Python Scripting API. The result was then combined in Unity for export to Google Cardboard and other VR devices.
The initial prototype here includes the following 3D data visualisations:
Heating energy usage in the City of Zürich
The twelve months of the years are represented, with time flowing past, depth indicating the change in the amount of heat consumed by the city in that month, year to year.

Electricity production sources in Switzerland
Water, Nuclear, Thermal and "Misc. Renewable" energy sources are represented in this time stream visualisation that works in a similar way to the one above.
