Cultural and Mixed Natural/Cultural Sites located in North America (i.e. Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America) where coded for vertical versus horizontal sociopolitical organization. This necessarily reduces the full complexity of tension between these two organization tendencies into a binary that is more easily interpreted.
