Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
if hex or rgb is provided for the color attribute for buttons, you get the expected behavior of on hover, the button color is a lighter version of the color provided.

However this behavior is broken if you provide a css variable. The color is recognized, but on hover the same color is used, giving you a solid block and making the text unreadable

Describe the solution you'd like
extend behavior to css variables

Describe alternatives you've considered
create a id:hover css property - does not work
on hover, swap with another button with the desired color implemented
