If I understand the code, this part of the jQuery API isn't supported, which breaks a jQuery plugin I'd like to use in a mobile project with Zepto:

http://jquery.vostrel.cz/reel

(and probably many other plugins as well).

Is there a reason this isn't supported, or am I missing something?

No particular reason. I didn't even know that API exists (haven't seen it in the wild)

I've given this a shot (see referenced commit in a separate branch) but I'm still not convinced that this should be in core. I'll leave this open until the time of the big 1.0
