AJAX requests should support username and password parameters for HTTP auth. This is supported by jQuery and standard XMLHTTPRequests, which makes it easy to implement (just pass the parameters to the standardized function). Currently it is just ignored.
This should be definitely fixed.
As a workaround, you can try using custom headers (as shown here http://stackoverflow.com/a/5507289, I haven't tested this).
