When using magit-init with a path like ~/Temp/foobar, instead expanding ~ to your home folder, it uses it as a literal directory name that is created in the same folder of the file you currently have open.

So if you're editing ~/Temp/foobar/boo.txt and call M-x magit-init which defaults to ~/Temp/foobar, instead of creating a git repo in /Users/jimeh/Temp/foobar it creates it in /Users/jimeh/Temp/foobar/~/Temp/foobar.

I'm running Emacs 24, Mac OS X 10.7.3.
