Would it be possible to change the README file and put more detailed instructions on how to install magit? I know this is obvious for most people, but I just spent the last hour to be able to install it on my computer because the instructions were not clear to me. To be precise, this is what the README file has
Download the latest tarball from [the github download page][download],
then Magit can be installed with the popular recipe of:
$ make && sudo make install
I had no idea I was supposed to unzip the .zip file (or the tarball file which I am not sure how to do), then use terminal to get into that directory and to then type the commands above. It seems very simple now that I figured it out, but I don't think it would be a bad thing to actually say it on the README file. Also, after successfully completing the steps for installation, I restarted emacs and I got the message:
file-error Cannot open load file, magit
This one didn't take me as long to figure out, but still, it would help to tell people they might have to include
(add-to-list `load-path "/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp")
in their .emacs file (the instructions say "This will put magit.el into /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp, where Emacs should be able to find it." which was a good hint, but why not be more explicit?).
OK, now time to start using Magit! :)
These steps are now covered in the INSTALL.md file.
